Properties and Activities of Phosphoribomutase in Human Leukemic Cells
The enzyme phosphoribomutase acts on the conversion of ribose-1-phosphate (R-1-P) to ribose-5-phosphate (R-5-P) (1). R-5-P is a substrate of phosphoribosyl-pyrophosphate (PRPP) synthetase, The R-5-P and PRPP pool in the cell has been shown to be small (2). R-l-P is liberated from purine nucleosides by the action of purine nucleoside Phosphorylase. Therefore, it seems that phosphoribomutase is an important enzyme in the reutilization of ribose from purine nucleosides and in the formation of PRPP. We have measured the activity of phosphoribomutase in human leukemic cells and the properties of this enzyme in leukemic cells were also studied.
