An Analysis of Bioelectrical Phenomena Evoked by Microiontophoretically Applied Excitotoxic Amino-Acids in the Feline Spinal Cord

Part of the book series: Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series ((WGCISS))

Abstract

Diacidic amino acids with the appropriate molecular configuration (Watkins, 1978) depolarize and excite most types of neurone. Most, if not all, of these agents applied topically in sufficient quantities will act as neurotoxins — irreversible damage ultimately occurs followed by neuronal death and necrosis. Thus, the term “excitotoxic” amino-acids has been coined by Olney (1978).
