Squid Fluxmeter Search for Monopoles in 400 kg of Old Iron Ore

With a superconducting fluxmeter a search was performed for magnetically trapped monopoles in ∼ 400 kg of old iron ore, by heating the sample above its Curie temperature. An upper limit of 2.3 × 10−6 monopoles/g is obtained for the density of magnetic poles heavier than 6 × 1014 GeV/c2 in the iron ore of ∼ 108 years old. We can estimate the flux of cosmic monopoles as less than 6.8 × 10−13 cm−2 s−1 sr−1 according to the age and the density of the sample examined.
