Detectors for Rare Events

Present day particle physics has raised interest in the observation of extremely rare events whose separation from background is often critically dependent upon the energy resolution and a clean signature of some disintegration or interaction pattern. Whenever purely electronic means are used, the search for increased energy or position resolution and data redundancy is usually limited by the corresponding increase in cost.
