Abstract

We consider a simply connected gauge group G, and assemble the Higgs fields into a scalar multiplet S, in some representation of G. The Higgs’ vacuum expectation value breaks G to H, some subgroup of G. If the second homotopy group π2(G/H) = π1 (H) is non-trivial, there is a conserved charge.1
