e+e Physics at PETRA — The First Five Years

Abstract

PETRA (Positron-Electron T andem Ring Accelerator) is located at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, and is the highest energy electron-positron storage ring in the world. This report reviews a few selected topics of the experimental investigations carried out at PETRA for the first five years of its operation beginning in 1978 by the five Collaborations CELLO, JADE, MARK J, PLUTO and TASSO. The physics objectives in the original proposals have largely been fulfilled. The emphasis of this review, based mainly on journal publications before July 15, 1983 (the fifth anniversary of the first successful storage of an electron beam at PETRA), is on the physics results, ranging over strong, electromagnetic and weak interactions. The topics covered include quark and gluon physics, and electroweak interference.

Although cited for comparison, no attempt has been made for any systematic coverage of the corresponding results from PEP of SLAC.
