Abstract

In a statement attributed to Allen, it has been said that the history of diabetes mellitus can be divided into four chronological sections.1 The first of these, the ancient period, gave us a clinical description of the disease. Much later, during the diagnostic period, which is associated with names such as Willis, Dobson, and Cawley, a first understanding of the nature of this affliction began to blossom. Then followed the period of empiric treatment initiated by Rollo. Finally, Claude Bernard ushered in the experimental period that has persisted to this day. There are literally hundreds of names for any of these four stages that could and should be mentioned in a comprehensive review of the history of diabetes. Obviously, this is not possible in the limited number of pages allotted to this chapter. Instead, an attempt will be made to retrace selectively some of the historical developments that led up to the present state of knowledge in this field, especially as they pertain to the various topics discussed in this book.
