The Fractology of Glass

Fracture, the ultimate catastrophe in which the strength of a glass article is defeated, is no instantaneous event. It begins at a definable origin and it spreads with measurable velocity to its conclusion. The paths by which it propagates tell a complex story of static and dynamic stress configurations, weaknesses of design and material inhomogeneities. In short, it leaves a record of the event and it leaves it in a form which can be read. It is the present purpose to discuss the details of this record and how they can best be seen and interpreted.
