Mucocutaneous Syndromes

Abstract

Coxsackievirus (CV) infections can produce erythematous (maculopapular) and vesicular mucocutaneous lesions. From these lesions as well as from throat secretions or feces, the causative virus can sometimes be isolated. Skin rashes and oropharyngeal lesions may be due to any of several CV. Any of them can cause a variety of mucocutaneous syndromes (Table I) as well as other types of disease. Specific CV diseases are herpangina and hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD), although other enteroviruses have sometimes been isolated in cases of these illnesses.
