Extraretinal Photosensitivity in Fish Larvae

The presentation of a paper on extraretinal photoreception may at first appear incongruous in an Advanced Study Institute on vision in fish. Extraretinal photoreceptors are, however, far more important to the life of fishes than the relatively small bulk of published research on this subject may reflect. Thus the inclusion of this contribution may serve to remind us that, although no other photoreceptor can approach the complexity and sophistication of the eye, there are other photosensitive organs, or cells, of functional importance in fish.
