Construction Aspects of Shells
Unlike more orthodox structures, thin shells escape being regimented into clearly established construction methodologies because of their very nature. The problem arises to some extent from the novelty of these structures that were never before used in construction, such as hyperboloids of revolution, hyperbolic paraboloids, and conoids. However, even when the geometry is historically well known, as it is in the case of domes, difficulties may derive out of the technology that present-day materials imply. For instance, traditional domes, which were usually built in masonry, do not share the same problems of cast-in-place concrete shells. More specifically, new problems are created when technologies for precasting or prestressing concrete are used, as well as when concrete is sprayed under pressure by the Gunite method or cast on inflatable pneumatic forms.
