Barrel shells can easily be visualized from their similarity to a portion of a typical barrel; they are simply part of a cylindrical surface. From the point of view of their morphology, barrel shells are simple—almost intuitive — structures. Once the arch was discovered, extending it to barrel vaulting was natural. Going from a planar to a three-dimensional structure in the practical construction was relatively simple, since at this level all structures are in reality three-dimensional.
