Regionalization of Substance Abuse Services Utilizing Existing Medical and Substance Abuse Facilities
One of the most vital aspects of the health care system that effectuates appropriate treatment for the patient while maintaining costs at a reasonable level is the process of categorizing the capabilities of hospital emergency departments in a given region. It is difficult to estimate the number of persons seen in the emergency departments of our hospitals with a primary or secondary diagnosis of alcohol and/or drug abuse. Persons may be received at the emergency department involved in accidents, with injuries, suffering from disease states, in psychotic or suicidal states; primarily or secondarily caused by substance abuse. Because of the large numbers of persons involved in these situations and because of our responsibility for providing the best possible care for all patients, categorization of available facilities is imperative.
