Abstract
Let us begin with a platitudinous remark. “Substance abuse treatment programs are understaffed!” The validity of this remark seems self-evident. Nonetheless, we conducted a brief needs assessment in Salt Lake City, Utah, to see if the data supported such a conclusion. Ten drug and/or alcohol programs were randomly selected from a local treatment resources manual. The directors of these programs were asked a simple question: “Is you program adequately staffed?” Nine out of ten (90%) said their programs were understaffed.
