Order Electricity at Smectic Liquid Crystal Interfaces

The spontaneous tilt of molecules inside thin smectic films and the observation of antiferroelectric order SA2 at a free surface of a SA1 material can be explained by the onset of the electric polarization associated with the gradient of orientational order.
