Abstract

The behavior of incommensurately modulated crystals is essentially influenced by effects hindering the modulation from free sliding and leading to metastable states. Thus nucleation processes and pinning of discommensurations by defects have to be considered when investigating and discussing static or dynamic properties of modulated phases. Low- and high-frequency dielectric measurements have revealed a global thermal hysteresis and memory effects in the modulated phases of K2SeO4-type crystals, which are connected with the dynamics of the discommensurations.
