In the world of contemporary physics, the researcher must content himself with knowing only the effects of particles, for the particles themselves can never be observed directly. The investigator must content himself with a track of condensed droplets in a cloud chamber or the ionization of a counter. The physicist can only deal with the effects produced by the particles rather than the particles themselves.
