Abstract

There is a growing interest worldwide in the extension of educational opportunities for adults. Continuing education, re-training, evening classes, part-time courses, extension studies and professional up-dating all indicate a shifting emphasis in educational provision — for people in jobs or at home. The developments in this field receive support from the International Labour Organization, which in 1974 enacted a convention on paid educational leave, and from national governments which devote resources and provide opportunities for intending students.
