Abstract
To bring out the physical nature of the electrostatic instability of a solid-state plasma associated with a negative current-voltage characteristic, we shall consider this instability from a more general point of view. For simplicity, we shall restrict ourselves to a solidstate plasma with one carrier species whose density does not change (i.e., we do not allow for carrier creation and recombination); the effective carrier mass is also assumed constant. An arbitrary electrostatic field in such a medium is described by the equations
