The Role of SH Groups in Enzymes

Only a few enzymes are known in which the direct participation of SH groups in catalysis has already been unambiguously demonstrated. Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (Gra-3-P-dehydrogenase, EC is one of the most studied of these. It is one of the enzymes of glycolysis and plays an important part in the carbohydrate metabolism of most living organisms. In the presence of NAD+ and phosphate it catalyzes the reversible oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to form 1,3-diphosphoglyceric acid.
