Photoelectron Spectroscopy of the Inner Shells

  • Thomas A. Carlson
Part of the Modern Analytical Chemistry book series (MOAC)

Abstract

The study of the inner shells of atoms is basically a study of atomic orbitals. The shifts in the binding energies of the core electrons as a function of chemical environment can be considered as a perturbation on the atomic system. Experimentally, PESIS started as a means to obtain information on atomic levels, the utilization of the data for chemical description coming as a by-product of better resolution. Thus, PESIS is in the first place an atomic measurement. It affords elemental identification and is another tool for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
