Magnetic Properties of Pd/Co Multilayers

Multilayers consisting of alternatingly ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers may have interesting magnetic properties, induced by the limited thickness of the layers and the great number of interfaces. The anisotropy of the magnetic moment, which determines the preferred direction of the magnetization, is one of the properties which can be influenced by the multilayered structure. Of specific interest are systems in which the preferred direction is oriented perpendicular to the interfaces and thus the film plane. This has its application in so-called perpendicular recording, which might increase the information density in recording, and is also of importance in magneto-optical data storage.
