Numerical Determination of the Reflectivity of Multilayered Neutron Mirrors

Adapting the theory of electrodynamics in the case of reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves due to interfaces in multilayered structures, the reflectivity of a given structure in a neutron-optical application can be calculated. In their fundamental paper J. Schelten and K. Mika describe a method of calculating the reflectivity from a product of transfer matrices, set up for each interface separately. This matrix formalism also takes into account refraction as well as absorption effects which are of importance even in ideal structures.
