Nonlinear Effects in the Propagation of Electron Plasma Waves in an Inhomogeneous Plasma Layer

Abstract

A review is given of some experiments on the dynamics of electron Langmuir oscillations and plasma waves in weakly inhomogeneous collisionless plasmas. Field amplification at a plasma resonance, collapse, and nonlinearities in the collisionless damping of waves are discussed. Experimental data on the deformation of the field distribution in the neighborhood of a plasma resonance are presented. It is established that, at high field amplitudes, in an inhomogeneous layer plasma waves fill the region from the critical density point nc to ~1/4nc.
