Flasks for Transporting Irradiated Nuclear Fuel
The design of flasks for the transport of future nuclear fuels is complicated by the high neutron emissions from ‘High burn-up’ and ‘MOX’ fuels.
The paper concludes that it is possible to design suitable flasks for future fuels without departing fundamentally from existing designs. It is acknowledged that well founded computer programs are available for calculating the main technical and engineering inputs and performance data, but this does not eliminate the need for demonstration testing to prove the flask designs.
