20 Foot Container System for Shipment of Spent MTR-Fuel Assemblies
A new development based on Type B(U)-casks integrated in a 20 foot container has recently been successfully introduced. The reinforced 20 foot container has a tie-down function and holds the shock absorbers. The system has been in use for 2 years now, and during this time about 240 spent fuel assemblies from German material test reactors have been shipped from Germany to the reprocessing plant in the United States.
One of the advantages of the container system is its compatibility with the different transport systems. It can be fully integrated into existing truck, train, or ship requirements used for the transport of usual (non-nuclear) goods. This makes the system very flexible in relation to different transport applications.
