Cement Solidification Using Large Containers: The Prediction of Product Quality
Cement solidification is an increasingly important activity in the field of radioactive waste management.
Solidification processes which are based upon ‘in-drum’ mixing methods offer a number of advantages, and if large containers are employed further benefits can be gained in terms of transportation, operator dose and cost. The large container enables a given waste volume to be processed in fewer operations, therefore subsequent handling and transport is minimised. Further benefits can be gained by performing the solidification operation with the container pre-installed within the transport container.
A programme of testwork has revealed that cement based laboratory formulations, derived under controlled conditions, can be scaled up to produce large 2000 litre size products. The stability of such products appears to be comparable or superior to small scale laboratory products.
