The views developed in this book can, in general, be reduced to the following: there are, at least in higher animals, three fundamental stages of operation of the digestive apparatus—cavital digestion which performs the initial transformations; membrane digestion which completes the cleavage of foodstuffs; and, finally, the processes of absorption.
