Heterotransplantation of Human Mammary Carcinoma Cells

The experimental study of factors regulating the behavior and the evolution of human mammary carcinomas has long been hindered by the lack of appropriate models Indeed, multiple differences in the physiopathology of mammary neoplasms of various species limit the utilization of spontaneous tumors of experimental animals. Tissue culture techniques, although very useful in investigations of mammary cell biology, are not applicable to the study of such processes as recurrences and metastases. Therefore, transplantation of human neoplasms into appropriate hosts appears to offer a more suitable approach as an in vivo system to verify and elucidate clinical and pathological observations on humans.
