Lattice Effects and the Magnetic Behaviour of Rare Earth Compounds

Abstract

The fact that the rare earth ionic moment in a crystal typically has a substantial orbital contribution qualitatively affects the nature of the magnetic behaviour. Because there is a large orbital contribution to the total ionic moment, the effect of the crystal electric field is qualitatively more striking than for magnetic systems of the 3d transition elements. Also magnetoelastic effects and anisotropic exchange can be qualitatively important, or even dominant, for the magnetic behaviour.
