Thermal Analysis of Mesophases
Liquid crystals and mesomorphic materials are generally described as states of matter, which exhibit spontaneous anisotropic features usually associated with solid crystals as well as flow properties commonly related to ordinary liquids. Depending on the particular compound such states can be caused by fusion or solvation. In the former case, the various thermotropic phases are obtained in reproducible temperature ranges, while in the latter, the lyotropic phases are realised in certain concentration intervals. This distinction is not always sharp, since certain lyotropic phases show a definite thermotropic behavior (1).
