Rare B Decays: A Window on the Standard Model and Beyond it for the 90’s

Abstract

Flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) have played a major role in leading to the present formulation of the standard model (SM) of the electroweak interactions. In particular the Glashow-Iliopoulos- Malani (GIM)1] mechanism and the prediction of the charm quark find their origin in the requirement of suppressing FCNG effects in the kaon system. The FCNG test (in particular, in kaon physics) have helped SM also “indirectly” by severely constraining (if not ruling out at all) extensions of it.
