Psycholinguistics at Work in the Information Age

Abstract

These comments, from a survey by Faigley and Miller (1982), depict a growing awareness of the importance of appropriate writing skills to the commercial success of business and individual professionals within business. The connection between productivity and effectiveness in written communication is supported by numerous observations. For example, in recent years we have witnessed a surge in the number of “communications managers” employed by Fortune 500 companies (Harris Bryant,1986).These specialized managers have primary responsibility for the writing quality of internal and external publications. The demand for this new type of business executive by successful organizations suggests that quality of writing is indeed important to commercial success.
