Role of Peptides in the Control of Gonadotropin Secretion

Abstract

In this chapter we will review the contributions, particularly from this laboratory, on the control of the gonadotroph by peptides acting at either the hypothalamic or pituitary level. The principal direct control is provided by LHRH which was discovered in 19601 and synthesized in 19712. We will begin by describing the localization of LHRH in the brain, and then move to a discussion of its action on the pituitary gland. This will be followed by an examination of putative synaptic transmitters involved in control of LHRH release which include a variety of monamines and peptides. Most of these mechanisms appear to operate via the intervention of prostaglandin. Finally we will discuss recent evidence indicating the probable existance of a separate FSH- releasing factor.
