Choosing the Right Microphone

  • John M. Eargle

A problem facing all recording engineers is what microphone to use for what application. How do we sort out the differences among them all? In this chapter, we will delve into technical differences—subtle or gross—as well as discuss some aspects of microphone choice that have little to do with technology, but much to do with psychology. We will discuss a number of vintage microphone designs that are currently popular, as well as modern designs.
