Construction of Models

Part of the Graduate Texts in Mathematics book series (GTM, volume 37)

In this chapter we shall give two methods of constructing models which form the main tools for all of our later work. The first method, the consistency family method, is an abstraction from the proof of the completeness theorem given in Chapter 11, and is due to Henkin, Smullyan, Makkai, and Keisler. The second method, of ultraproducts, is an algebraic kind of construction of a model from old models, and is mainly due to Łoś.
