The Future of LIMS

Abstract

Currently, LIMS are applying computing technology in the laboratory environment. They are reshaping existing methods of operation by making them more efficient through faster turnaround times and more sample throughput per analyst. They routinely provide information management tools to lab analysts, managers, and sample submitters. They are providing data repositories and data integrity, and they are allowing users to streamline resource allocation through automation. The time will come, however, when LIMS will no longer be making existing methods better. LIMS will evolve to the point of defining new methods of operation — but this sort of change takes time. It can’t happen overnight — it takes years. At least we can be confident that we’re on the right track.
