Analytical Methods for Pesticides
The analysis of pesticide residues presents unusual problems because of the small amounts of materials that must be measured and the large amounts of interfering substances that must be removed. Tolerances for all compounds used on edible crops are set by the Food and Drug Administration. For, compounds that possess low toxicity, tolerances are relatively high. Thus, residues of 7 ppm of DDT are permissible. However, crops containing a few hundredths of a ppm of endrin can be condemned. It is often necessary to analyze for much smaller residues than these in environmental health studies, since residues of pesticides in water at the parts per trillion (ppt) level are significant because aquatic flora and fauna are able to accumulate them against concentration gradients. In general, it is necessary to be able to analyze for pesticides at the 0.01 to 10 ppm level in foods and animal tissues and at the ppt or ppblevels and upward in environmental pollution studies.
