In this and the preceding decade a great deal has been learnt about the composition and biosynthesis of elastin, the chemistry of its crosslinks and in part, its amino acid sequences. Probably because its study has been the concern mainly of biologists and protein chemists, there has been little attempt until recently to study whole elastin or its peptide degradation products by the new and powerful techniques available to physical chemistry.
