The Effect of Stimulated Macrophages on High Endothelial Venules and Germinal Centres in Lymph Nodes of Rat
Six weeks after interruption of afferent lymphatic vessels popliteal lymph nodes are severely depleted of macrophages (Mø) and have no germinal centres, lymphoblasts or plasma cells. The endothelial cells of the high endothelial venules (HEV) are flattened, have a poor affinity for pyronin, show an inactive nucleus and a paucity of protein synthesizing and secreting cell organelles. Lymphocytes in transit are absent in these venules (1, 2).
