Abstract

The concept that germinal centres are sites of B memory (BM) cell proliferation is well-documented. Our own contribution to this area has been to provide evidence which suggests that the stimulus for germinal centre development is the deposition of antigen-antibody (Ag-Ab)-C3 complexes on follicular dendritic cells in lymphoid follicles. This conclusion is largely based on the capacity of minute doses of performed Ag-Ab complexes to induce the rapid appearance of BM cells, and germinal centres, in mice (reviewed in 1).
