Synthesis of Carbon Stocks and Flows in the Open Ocean Mixed Layer
At the conclusion of the NATO ARI Conference on Heterotrophic Activity in the Sea a working group composed of Barry Hargrave, Peter Williams, Bo Riemann, Richard Newell, Angelo Carlucci, Alain Herbland and Bruce Peterson attempted to diagram the carbon stocks and flows in the mixed layer of the open ocean (Fig. 1). During the preceeding week we had heard a great deal on these topics and on many other aspects of heterotrophic activity in the sea as well. We chose to depict the open ocean mixed layer because that habitat allowed us to make maximum use of the information presented during the conference and because it is probably the best studied habitat in the sea.
