Abstract
One question Americans have asked themselves since the end of World War II is whether they will stay committed to the defense of the democratic nations of the world. In the face of possible menaces from regimes like the Soviet Union, will they remain engaged, militarily and otherwise, continuing to risk conventional and nuclear war, and continuing to invest resources in the preparation for such wars? Another question is whether the commitment will continue in light of the proliferation of advanced weapons.
