Virulent Escherichia coli strains are involved with a variety of clinical diseases and in a broad spectrum of hosts. Often, the types of virulence factors a strain produces determine its ability to survive and multiply in certain organs, or in certain hosts. For example, the presence of a polysaccharide capsule enables the virulent strain that produces it to multiply in the blood stream and vital organs.
