Binding of Enterobacterial Fimbria to Proteins of Basement Membranes and Connective Tissue — A Novel Function for Fimbriae

Abstract

Fimbriae are important virulence factors in a number of enterobacterial infections. It is generally thought that they increase the pathogenic potential of bacteria by mediating adherence to glycoconjugates of host epithelia, thus giving resistance to mechanical clearance defense systems of the body. Indeed, the various fimbrial types found on Escherichia coli causing extraintestinal infections in humans (reviewed in 1–3) have beien shown to exhibit a distinct tissue tropism in their adhesion to mammalian epithelia (2–9). Some of these fimbriae also interact selectively with soluble compounds found in normal human urine (10), and it seems that the pathogenicity of fimbriae in urinary tract infections depends both on the availability of fimbrial receptors or binding molecules in tissues and on the absence of soluble adherence inhibitors in normal human urine (reviewed in 2, 3).
