Future of Tamarind and Tartrate in Preventing Recurrence of Renal Calculi

Abstract

It is well known that the incidence of renal calculi is strikingly low in South India as compared to North India1. The low incidence of urolithiasis in the South cannot be attributed to the predominance of rice in their diet as urolithiasis is common in several other rice-eating countries2. One characteristic regular constituent of the South Indian diet is tamarind which is not used in North. Tamarind is very rich in potassium bitartrate and tartaric acid3. Tartrate is a strong chelating agent and may inhibit crystallization of calcium oxalate. The present study was therefore conducted to ascertain if feeding tamarind would lower the calcifying propensity of urine.
