Creativity in Skilled Performance
Boden (1981) relates the maxim given by Descartes as advice to the young mathematician, that having solved a problem he should check carefully through the steps of proof. This is surely similar in intent to a heuristic given more recently by Polya (1945), that finding a solution to a problem should mark not the end but the beginning of a mathematical inquiry, which attempts to find simpler solutions, other kinds of solution, and generalizations of the problem. The problem solver is thus motivated to refine his techniques and to find a perspective for the problem that places it in a broader domain. The implication of the advice is that a good problem solver is also a problem seeker.
