Breathing Pattern Characteristics and Survival Time during Severe Hypoxia in Cats

Abstract

Sleep-related breathing disorders including numerous episodes of apnea, hypopnea, and oxygen desaturation are relatively conunon disorders that may affect up to a third of elderly persons (McGinty et al., 1987; Berry and Phillips, 1988). Although the clinical features of the sleep apnea syndrome were described, the mechanisms underlying the natural history of the disease are uncertain. Some data indicate that, besides other factors, a decrement in chemoreceptor response coincides with sleep apneas (Littner et al., 1984; Martin et al., 1986). It has been postulated that hypoxia associated with nightly episodes of obstructive apneas alters the ventilatory control mechanism in the central nervous system, resulting in lapses of ventilatory effort (Sanders et al., 1985). We, therefore, assumed that an animal model of repeated hypoxic exposures resulting in apneas could be meaningful in understanding the mechanisms leading to hypoxia-induced respiratory arrest.
