Abstract
Recent years have seen major changes within manufacturing industry in the United Kingdom. The decline of traditional industries coupled with increased competition from abroad and the challenge presented by the removal of E.G. tariff barriers in 1992 have all contributed to a greater awareness of the need for efficiency and flexibility within the United Kingdom manufacturing community.
To help to meet this challenge a research initiative to develop decision support systems for Manufacturing Management has been established at Sunderland Polytechnic. The project is a four year co-operative study between local manufacturing companies and the Polytechnic and is supported by funds from the National Advisory Body. At end of the second year of the study (March 1989) ten companies are co-operating in the project with a total of thirteen research projects being supported. This paper will discuss the overall aims, objectives and strategies behind the research project and comment upon progress made to date.
