System for Real Time Process Monitoring and Adaptive Control during CNC Deep Hole Drilling
The inherent low strength of small diameter twist drills for deep hole drilling, in conjunction with the reduced coolant penetration to the cutting zone restricts the possibility of unmanned operation. The system described monitors the cutting forces on-line and controls the feed rate, spindle speed and depth of penetration accordingly, in order to ensure safety of the tool and workpiece. Other functions are tool life monitoring, data acquisition and display and an alarm diagnostics facility.
